When cutting lighter gauge steel or aluminum on occasion - are the cuts just as clean as the 14/16 gauge cuts or would a different shear be needed?

As long as the blades are in good shape you can expect a high quality cut in thinner materials as well. The only drawback to the heavier capacity shear is the cutting speed and minimum turning radius.
