Great question! Every manufacturer has their own ideas and opinions about this and here are some of ours. The diameter and weight of the upper wheel have a lot to do with the 'feel' of how an English Wheel operates more than the function. The ratio of size versus the lower anvil wheel and the upper wheel weight will change the inertia and therefore the human force required to push the panel through the wheels and change direction. The upper wheel's width is a more critical feature as it serves as a guide to keep the panel flat. Narrow upper wheels with sharper corners can lead to grooves and marks in the panel.
