Among the various brands and models of hole punches available, does one produce cleaner holes than the rest?
Mittler Bros. Standard Bench Press, 3 ton
I am shopping for manual hole punches with 3 different types of requirements. I am wondering if one brand/model is best for both, or if multiple punch presses would be recommended.
One application will be for punching roughly .020 thick anodized aluminum sheet, requiring very clean, aesthetic-grade round holes between 1/8 and 3/8 inch with minimal material distortion, and no marring of the top (punch-entering) side, which is critical for aesthetics. The rear side will be obscured.
Another application is for punching up to .125 thick aluminum with round holes up to 3/8 inch, as well as slots that can be cascaded to make rectangular openings. Any marring would be obscured in the final application. Rectangles typically would be about 2x4 inches.
The final application is for up to 3/4" round holes in up to .040 mild steel. Marring is not an issue here either.
Aside from possible limitations on slot punching capacity, would the Mittler 3-ton press and dies cover all these bases? Are there any advantages to the Roper Whitney 17, for example, as far as hole finish quality? 6" throat depth is sufficient for all my needs.
Finally, I will be looking to use a press for inserting self-clinching fasteners. The manufacturers specify simple die requirements similar to punching dies. Can custom dies be provided through TrickTools?

All of the punches we offer would provide quality results as long as the tooling is set up properly. The key to the best result in punching would be getting the proper die clearance for the material thickness you are working with. Marring or distortion in punching would be most likely during the stripping process or when the punch comes out of the material. The Mittler punch would eliminate this with a urethane stripper.
